Oil Region's Strongest
Man II 06/19/2010
This was the second year for Oil Region’s Strongest Man and I believe it was a success. The numbers were down in the open class but the guys that came brought their A game. The masters came out in full force. Between the light and heavyweight masters divisions we had 9 masters’ competitors. The highlight of the day was the heavyweight open class. Three of the best lightweights in the country (Alex Truman, Damian Hollis, and Gene Anderton) decided to enter the heavyweight class. The heavyweight class was rounded out by Andrew Presnell, an impressive heavyweight with a tremendous amount of potential and Craig Pluta, an accomplished powerlifter who is new to the sport. The heavyweights battled all day long with Alex Truman earning the title of Oil Region’s Strongest Man in the end. The day started with a third generation member of Team Lindeman, 8 year old Mario Fontanazza, flipping a 200 pound tire 6 or 7 times. For photos of the event, please see http://www.flickr.com/

Washington's strongest Apple III

To all my friends, family and sponsors,

Thank you for being a part of this year's "Strongest Apple"!  I appreciate every single one of you that made the trip from near, or far to help with my show.  Plus you also endured a hot day on the asphalt. Hopefully, all of you will be able to return for next year's show. We will be relocating to a new area in the Marina.  If you noticed, on the north side of the pier was a lot of construction.  They are currently finishing a major renovation where they have removed the boat launch, and are replacing it with a Special Events area right on the waters edge. You will not see the boats that are moored there by our contest site.  Instead, you will see the waters of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains in the distance! The City of Des Moines was very happy that we were able to put on the show again, and they can't wait for us to be in the new site next year.

How to qualifiy for the 2011 Amateur Strongman World Championships at the Arnold Sports Festival

After the success of the inaugural Amateur Strongman World Championship at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio the amateur strongman world is a buzz with questions on how to and who will make the cut in 2011. “There are 60 slots available for the 2011 ASWC,” said ASC VP Mike Johnston, “21 of which will be Americans. The US qualifying events will follow the same pattern as the 2010 event.”

North American Strongman, Inc. (NAS) is co-operated by Willie and Dione Wessels. They are both committed to developing strongmen and strongwomen here in North America. With the assistance of the state chairs and the many great promoters that they work with, they do their best to help provide quality and safe contests.

NAS is the premier amateur strongman corporation in the world. Our mission is to provide quality strongman contests for the public while ensuring fair treatment for the competitors. We want to make sure you have plenty of opportunities to use your membership. Through our current event listings and message board, we will provide an updated list of contests for you to compete in. Please check the NAS site often to see current listings as we generally add new contests weekly. Don't forget to join our mailing list to receive important announcements and changes.

Through the multitude of qualifying contests (Platinum Plus, Platinum, Gold, and Silver) held all over the United States, athletes can qualify for the North American Strongman Championships. Learn more about the different contest levels »

Weight classes are as follows:

  • Lightweight Division (175, 200, 231)
  • Heavyweight Division ( 265, 300 and SHW)

Some contest will have the categories split up in three divisions. Usually that split involved Lightweight (175, 200); Middleweight ( 231, 265); and Heavyweight (300, SHW).

We also provide Light and heavyweight classes for:

  • Police, Fire, and Military
  • Masters (40+) in the Lightweight (up to 231) and Heavyweight (232 and above) divisions only. There is also a 50+ and 60+ category added at nationals.
  • Teenage (up to 200 – LW) 201 and above (HW)
  • Women LW, MW, and HW. (LW- 140 and below, MW- 141 – 165 HW- 165and above)
  • NOVICE Division - Many promoters also offer a novice division. In order to compete as a novice competitor, it must either be the first NAS Sanctioned event or the athlete could not have placed 1st - 3rd in a previous contest as a Novice competitor. If the athlete has competed in an open contest, he is not eligible to compete as a novice no matter what the placing was.

In the last four years we have sanctioned over 180 contests. Check upcoming contests to see if there is one in your area and if there is not, think about promoting a contest yourself. The yearly membership is $20 for Teenagers and $40 for everyone else. These can be purchased the day of the contest or by printing out and mailing in the downloaded membership form.

NAS is here to provide a training ground for the professional strongman of the future. We are also here to give those who want to try strongman a chance to experience it. With Dione being the President of ASC (American Strongman Corp), we will be working together to give you the best opportunities to compete and take strongman as far as you want. The alliance between ASC and NAS Inc. will guarantee all members the highest quality of contests and professionalism. We are here for you, the competitors, sponsors, and promoters. Feel free to contact us if we can be of any assistance.

Train smart and God Bless!
